You can also access Matter AI by creating a document chat for specific documents within a matter.

Upon opening Matter AI, you will be greeted with a welcome message.

Details of the current matter will appear in the top right corner of the window. 

At the bottom of the window is the chat box where you will be able to ask Matter AI questions relating to the current matter.

To get started, type your question or prompt in the chat box and click  or press Enter to send.

Suggestions

You may also select one of the pre-populated Suggestions provided by Matter AI. These suggestions are based on the matter type and the correspondence within the current matter. Suggestion prompts update in real time based on the previous questions you've asked.

Model Selector

Choose from a range of leading AI models, including ChatGPT and Claude variants, to match the capabilities required for your task.

Different matters call for different levels of reasoning, speed, and depth. With the Model Selector, you can opt for a faster model for straightforward queries or a more advanced reasoning model for complex legal analysis.

Click on the model selector dropdown below Ask me anything and select from any of the following models: 

• GPT 5.4 - Instant
• GPT 5.4 - Thinking
• Claude 4.6 Sonnet
• Claude 4.6 Opus

All Agent

Matter AI now has a dedicated All tab, separate from your standard Matter AI Chat, that serves as a purpose-built workspace bringing together agentic chat, deep thinking, and LawY-powered research in one place. The All agent reasons through your question step by step, transparently showing its thinking as it works, and automatically draws on LawY when your query calls for it, returning cited, authoritative legal sources alongside its answer.

• Open Matter AI
• Select All at the top of the window

• Click the + icon and toggle on Research.

• Type your query.
• The AI will respond drawing on LawY research if 'Research' and your question calls for it.

Prompts

The Try a prompt for that box provides a curated list of legally pre-drafted AI prompts from LEAP’s AI Prompt Library, based on the query you have entered. When a highly relevant AI Prompt is available from the Library, it will be suggested to you. If the suggestion is not needed, it can be dismissed.

If you decide to use a suggested Prompt, you can do so easily by clicking on the suggestion. The Prompt document will then open and automatically run. For more information on LEAP’s Prompts, see Matter AI for Word.

Depending on the questions asked, answers provided may include references to correspondence items where the origin of the information has been retrieved by Matter AI.

If the Matter AI response has multiple correspondence items attached to the reference, you can click the + icon next to the reference to view all correspondence items used.

To view any of the references, click on the document or click on for more options including Open, Chat about this document or Preview. 

You can start a new chat about a specific reference document by with the Chat about this document option. This will open a new chat with the reference document highlighted in the top right corner. 

The Preview option will open the document within the Correspondence Preview window. You will also be able to view all correspondence items on the matter in the left pane.

You are able to regenerate any of the Matter AI generated responses by clicking the Regenerate icon in the bottom left corner of the response.

Canvas

Canvas now gives users more control over the AI-generated content. You no longer have to regenerate full responses to tweak a paragraph. Canvas turns the AI output into an editable canvas, allowing you to improve, add or remove text in the response based on the selected text and instruction used.

You can use Canvas by clicking on the relevant section of text in the AI response and then select:

• Ask Matter AI: Ask follow-up questions or provide new instructions specific to the selected text
• Regenerate : Matter AI will regenerate the selected text
• Delete : Remove any part of the selected text response that you don't want

You are able to copy the text of any Matter AI generated response by clicking the Copy icon in the bottom left corner of the response.

You are able to send any of the Matter AI generated chat responses to Microsoft Word or Outlook by clicking the Send icon in the bottom left corner of the response.

You can choose one of the following options to send the response:

• Microsoft Word - Creates a new Word document and inserts the Matter AI generated response into it.
• Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook (with attachments) - Generates a new email with the Matter AI generated response automatically included in the email body.

The Document Status view provides a clear overview of the processing state of all documents in your matters, showing whether each has been successfully ingested, is still processing, excluded or has failed.

Below each Matter AI generated response, you can use the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons  to provide feedback.

You may also provide any written feedback within the text box field.

You are able to view the complete history of your previous Matter AI chat sessions for the matter from the left hand side of the window.

Click on any previous chat session to reopen and continue where you left off.

You can click the button to hide or show the chat history side bar.

Matter AI chat history is visible only by the individual user and not by anyone else. When a colleague opens the same matter, they will not be able to view your Matter AI chat history.
